The cover story
Grain stores drew mice. Mice drew cats. Cats, sensing an all-you-can-eat opportunity and a warm human, decided to stay. Self-domestication — they chose us.
They were sent to Earth for one purpose.
They forgot what it was. Then they napped.
Chapter I · The Descent
Somewhere in the retellings of the ancient world, a story keeps surfacing: that cats were sent here on purpose. We can't prove the cosmic dispatch order — but the real history is almost stranger, and far better documented.
“They descended to guard the grain, to judge the mortals, and to sit precisely where they were not wanted.”
— The Legend of the Nine, as retold across the internet ✦
Grain stores drew mice. Mice drew cats. Cats, sensing an all-you-can-eat opportunity and a warm human, decided to stay. Self-domestication — they chose us.
On Cyprus, a person was buried beside a cat some 9,500 years ago — proof the bond was already deep long before Egypt gilded them.
Egypt made it official: cats became sacred, linked to the goddess Bastet, mummified, and mourned. Harm one, and the penalty could be death.
For fun: the “sent from the stars” framing is playful myth, inspired by a viral video. Everything presented as fact below — dates, figures, biology — is drawn from mainstream sources including Encyclopædia Britannica.
As farming begins in the Fertile Crescent, wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) move in to hunt the rodents raiding the harvest.
A person and a cat are buried side by side on Cyprus — among the earliest hard evidence that cats and people had already formed a bond.
Genetics trace domestic cats to a wave from Asia Minor and, later, a hugely influential Egyptian line.
The cat-headed goddess Bastet is venerated; cats are bred, adored, and mummified by the thousands.
The first major cat show fills London's Crystal Palace, and the selective breeding of pedigree cats takes off.
Edward Lowe's absorbent clay changes everything — cats can finally live comfortably indoors, and the modern house cat is born.
France launches Félicette, the first — and so far only — cat in space. She survives the flight and returns to Earth.
From Grumpy Cat to endless viral clips, cats become the most-shared animal online — arguably the internet's true mascot.
An estimated 600 million cats share the planet with us — and remain, genetically, barely changed from their wild ancestors. Not fully tamed. By choice.
Chapter II · Generated Motion Picture
A 60-second short film — no footage, no image files. Every frame is drawn in real time in your browser from code: a comet, a landing, a first purr. Captions included.
A full text transcript of the film is available in the scene-by-scene transcript below for anyone who prefers to read it.

PART 01 / 06
12+ muscles each
Each ear is steered by more than a dozen muscles, swivelling up to 180° to pinpoint a rustle. Cats hear well beyond our range — high into the ultrasonic, perfect for tracking squeaking prey.

Chapter IV · Superpowers
Cats are crepuscular ambush predators — most alert at dawn and dusk. Their senses are calibrated accordingly, and mostly leave ours in the dust.
⅙ the light
Cats need only about one-sixth of the light we do. Drag the slider to dim the room and see who still spots the mouse.
Lights on — everyone can see.
200 million sensors
A cat's nose carries around 200 million scent receptors. Ours manages roughly 5 million. Their world is painted in smell.
up to ~64 kHz
Cats hear far into the ultrasonic — well above our ceiling near 20 kHz — the better to hear a mouse's squeak.
no sweetness
With only about 473 taste buds to our ~9,000 — and a broken sweet-receptor gene — cats literally cannot taste sugar. They're wired for meat.
Chapter V · The Rosetta Whisker
Every sound here is a real recorded cat, played back live through the Web Audio API — chirp and yowl are the same meows, just sped up or slowed down. Press a button to generate the waveform and learn what your cat is actually saying.
A real-time visualiser of whatever sound is playing. Watch the purr rumble low and the hiss scatter into noise.

Chapter VI · The Genesis Lab
Design your own cat. Each choice comes with the real genetics behind it — coat colour, pattern, and why calico cats are almost always female.

Chapter IX · Cats & Society
Roughly 350–370 million cats live as pets across the planet — and hundreds of millions more roam free. Where a cat is born shapes how good its life will be.
pet cats worldwide (estimated)
in the USA — the most of any country
of Russian households own a cat — the world's highest rate
Istanbul treats its street cats with near-religious devotion — fed, sheltered and adored by whole neighbourhoods. The 2016 documentary Kedi made these communal cats world-famous.
Japan has 11 “cat islands” where felines outnumber people, more than 150 cat cafés, and the beckoning maneki-neko in shop windows everywhere.
Where cats are cherished they flourish; elsewhere, huge free-roaming populations, patchy welfare laws and “kitten season” overwhelm shelters. Spay/neuter and adoption are the global fix.
Population figures are estimates and vary by source and year.
